Flash Player 10 - beta?

May 15th, 2008

Came across this post today from flashguru.com that talks about Flash Player 10. Aparently an early release of the Flash 10 Player is available from Adobe today. Here are some really cool features I wanted to highlight from Adobe’s Site.

1st NYC Flash Meetup

March 27th, 2008

Last night I organized my first The New York Flash Meetup1 . It went well and there were some good conversations about the editors people use, porting over AS 2 to AS3, Flash Frameworks, as well as how to set up good workflow. Here is a copy of last nights itinerary:

Flex SDK & Textmate

March 26th, 2008

On my quest to build a better mouse trap I was looking into using Textmate with the open source Flex SDK. I love FDT 3 but sometimes you just want a light weight editor that can quickly get you up and running, especially on small projects. Here is a good tutorial to help you get started.

Also don’t forget to check out this extra bundle for ActionScript Utilities. Lots of thanks to Wil Stuckey1 for helping me set this stuff up today and reminding me that Textmate still rules.

I just went through a great tutorial that shows how to set up the free Flex 3 SDK with FDT. It took about 10 mins to run through and I am ashamed I waited this long to set it up. Looks really promising because I was getting sick of waiting for the Flash IDE to compile. My goal is to use the SDK to compile my main apps and use the IDE to create swf libraries to use with my External Runtime Library Utility. Pick up the tutorial here or the PDF here.

camelCase vs under_scores

January 21st, 2008

One of my pet peeves is code you can’t read or understand by quickly glancing over it. Since the roots of ActionScript come from a language where everything was written in camel case that doesn’t make it right. I have long favored underscoring my variable names and methods and here is why.

New Macbook Pro = FAST!

December 25th, 2007

Just got my new Macbook Pro 2.6 with 4 gigs of ram and a 200gig HD (Nerd) and been running it for the better part of a day. It’s really fast; a noticeable difference from my black Macbook 2.0 with 2 gigs of ram. One thing I noticed about Leopard is Flash and PhotoShop CS 3 windows and toolbars have trouble redrawing and sometimes look completely grayed out until you click on them. Not sure if this is happening in all Adobe programs but its annoying. I am also having trouble installing Windows through BootCamp but I think that is a Windows issue and not my laptop

Since it was tax time and I needed the deduction I feel like it was a good investment. Here is a link to where I got it from for only $3,060 (no tax). Thats not bad considering the same configuration on Apple’s site would have been at a lot more. There are only a few days left in the year so if you need deductions go and get them!
