Dice Poker Evaluator

August 28th, 2008

Not sure how many of you out there have been playing Motion Poker X on your iPhones but I have been addicted ever since Apps were legally made available on the iPhone. Usually when I play a game I like I try to think of how to build it in Flash. Mobile phone games make really good inspiration and game development was one of the biggest reasons why I got into Flash in first place1.

Well I tried making a class to evaluate a poker hand from a set of dice, similar to Yahtzee, but didn’t really have the time so I turned to our genius intern Aidan Coyne. In two week he has learned ActionScript 3, reprogramed usb drivers for a toy missile launcher, created a socket server to controls said missile launch from Flash and the web, schooled me on VI and command line at my meetup, learned Objective C, created an iPhone app to control said missile launcher, and created an automated Ant workflow/trace stripping build file for me.

Today I felt it was time for a challenge so I asked him to build a class that can be used to evaluate a dice poker hand. In true Aidan fashion by the end of the day he presented me with the following Dice Poker Evaluation Class. Make sure you check it out and some of his other posts on his blog. We have been throwing everything we can think at him and he has successfully delivered to the T everything we asked. Honestly he has my vote for Best Developer Intern Ever and unfortunately tomorrow is his last day. I told him I would help get a little more traffic to his site so please make sure you check it out!
