Flash Photo Galleries

August 28th, 2007

I am doing some research on Photo Galleries on the web and thought I would share what I liked:

NY Times Audio Gallery - Audio Gallery
A really clean gallery with a nice Audio playback feature. My favorite part of this gallery is the thumbnail preview as you scrub through the gallery. Also the full screen option is handled nicely by not distorting the photo and simply expanding the entire player application to fill the screen. The auto hiding controls in full screen mode is nice too.

This is vary similar to my Flash Bum site as well as some of the So Fake stuff. I like the mouse navigation and build up animation. One thing I do not like is that the layout is always the same and it’s a little to grid like for me. They could have easily worked on a better layout for the photos. Also the frames are very nice but I would have liked to seen more variety and colors.

JanetJarman.com - http://www.janetjarman.com
This is a really clean looking gallery/portfolio site. I love its layout, presentation, and transitions. The subtle details like the gallery labels growing out at an angle, description with blurred out photo as a background, and the caption tray really help this site stand out. I also like the Gallery Index (Contact Sheet) option.

CarldeKeyzer.com

This is one of my all time favorite gallery sites. The intro photo gallery is very nice. The indexes of galleries are intuitive in how it highlights the currently selected gallery and lists the other galleries around it. Also the slide show thumbnail try has a great auto slide feature as you move through the images.

J-Exhibit.com

Another really slick and minimalist portfolio site. The presentation of the image is nice and the zoom in feature is a nice touch but the circular gallery image selector is the gravy.

New York Jets - http://www.newyorkjets.com/fan_zone/photos/
This my be cheating but here is the photo gallery I built for the New York Jets. It was designed by AKQA and I used SlideShow pro for the gallery display part. The gallery selector, controls, and number previews are all custom built to work around the SlideShow component.

Also based on the same gallery application is this scaled down version used in news articles and on the home page as part of the site wide embeddable media player.

Hey man…just saw your blog here and thought it was cool you were reviewing Flash photo galleries. I have always been amazed that they have not been used more on the net in general.

    Hope things are good,

    Josh
